Scope of Work
MD Acoustics was commissioned to assess and engineer noise and vibration isolation for a new multi-level Go Kart track located on the third floor of a busy Mall. The primary challenge involved mitigating the high-energy impact of indoor go-karting to protect neighboring businesses, specifically ensuring that noise levels in the tenant space directly below remained under the lease-mandated limit of 75 dB.
To develop an effective mitigation strategy, the team conducted a detailed structural evaluation of the mall site using modal analysis and force impact testing to understand the existing concrete slab’s dynamic response. This data was integrated with real-world vibration and airborne noise measurements captured from a similar Go Kart facility. By modeling worst-case racing scenarios and collisions against the Oakbrook site’s specific structural conditions, MD Acoustics was able to quantify potential impacts and engineer precise isolation designs.
Outcome
Through comprehensive baseline testing and predictive modeling, MD Acoustics demonstrated that the proposed track would successfully meet all lease requirements, with noise levels falling well below the 75 dB threshold. The analysis revealed that the existing double concrete slab provided substantial mass to naturally block airborne noise. To mitigate structure-borne vibrations, the team engineered a custom isolation system featuring Regupol rubber pads and felt layers, which were proven to reduce vibration amplitudes by 10 to 30 dB across critical frequencies.
Beyond immediate compliance, MD Acoustics provided a “Good, Better, Best” framework of tiered floor and ceiling assemblies to future-proof the space for subsequent tenants. By utilizing specialized components like isolation clips and suspended insulation, these designs offer the landlord scalable solutions for varying levels of noise sensitivity. This data-driven approach ensured that the high-energy raceway could coexist harmoniously within a premium multi-tenant commercial environment.
